Rickets caused by Feeding Solid Beverage—Solid Beverage or FSMP?

from CIRS by

One week ago, Hunan TV station reported “Swollen Head Kids”, and on May 13, 2020, SAMR has instructed the market regulation department in Hunan province to carry out a thorough investigation, impose heavy penalties on the enterprise involved in the case in accordance with the law, and release the results of the investigation to the public in a timely manner. Two days after, SAMR released the Notice on Specific Rectification of Food including Solid Beverage, Pressed Candy and Substitute Tea.

“Swollen head” is one of the significant symptoms of rickets which was caused by, in this issue, feeding food protein allergy infant with a solid beverage product shown below.

However, such products cannot meet the nutritional demands of infants’ growing, and so cannot replace infant formula or infant FSMP to be fed.

In China, FSMP shall be registered to SAMR and get registration approval certificate while solid beverages are not necessary to do so. Thus, the simplest way to distinguish them is to find if there is approval certificate number of FSMP on the labelling.

As highlighted in the picture below, FSMP certificate no. is “国食注字TY20185012”. “TY” is the capitals of Chinese pinyin “Te Yi” which is the abbreviation of FSMP in Chinese; “20185012” means that this is the 12th foreign products approved in China in 2018. And if the “5” is “0”, it is a domestic product. To know more about the approved FSMP in China, please click here.

As mentioned above, SAMR will conduct checks and so will the market regulation department in every province and autonomous region in China. In fact, they are doing the checks already. For example, Zhejiang market regulation department so far has sent law enforcement officers 11850, and check the food sellers 12726 as well as 1 FSMP production enterprise.

In the end, we wish there will be no such issue in the future, at least, no harms to babies and kids. However, except the false advertising of the enterprises, the consumers, in specific, the parents shall learn more about the relevant products, so as to avoid such bad things happening again.
