According to the requirements in the Food Safety Law of China, the new food raw materials and additives used for food production should pass the safety assessment of the National Health Commission (NHC). In recent years, with the support of favorable policies, enterprises have made many innovations, which promote the emergence of various new raw materials seeking compliance with relevant regulations. With the goal of helping enterprises to have an overview of the current food industry, this webinar will analyze the application approval of new food raw material and additives in China from 2018 to 2022, and share the latest information of research and compliance progress of those hot food raw materials such as HMOs, NMN, and postbiotics.
On March 2, National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China (NHC) issued an announcement (No. 1 of 2023) for “Three New Foods” with 28 products approved, including one new food raw material, 16 new food additives, and 11 food-related products
Do you know the acceptance and approval status of new food additives in China between 2018 and 2022? In this article, our food experts team will guide you through detailed information about the approval status of new food additives in China. According to the statistics, 301 new food additives were accepted between 2018 and 2022, with 37 in 2018, 56 in 2019, 73 in 2020, 63 in 2021 and 72 in 2022.
Recently, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published the updated list of QPS-recommended microorganisms, in which six new taxonomic units (TUs) received the qualified presumption of safety (QPS) status and one existing microorganism was withdrawn. In China, the QPS list can be commonly found in the approval information of microorganisms from the announcement interpretation of “Three New Foods” issued by the national health commission (NHC). People may be confused about what the QPS list is, and how it works in the compliance of microorganisms in China. Therefore we will cover the two questions mentioned above in three parts: the introduction of QPS; the content of the update; and its significance in the declaration of “Three New Foods”.
In 2022, the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China (NHC) issued three announcements (No. 1, 2022, No. 2, 2022, and No.5, 2022) for the approval of new food-related products (including "new food contact additives and resins"). A total of 38 new food-related products (including expanded use) were approved. According to the website of NHC and China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA), a total of 31 new food contact resins and additives applications were officially accepted and 19 food-related products (including expanded use) were issued for public comment.
On February 10, 2023, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) issued five food additives for public comment. This included two new food enzymes, one new food nutrition enhancer, one food additive with expanded scope, and one food nutrition enhancers with expanded scope and dosage. The deadline for public comments is March 8, 2023.
By the end of December 2022, the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China (NHC) issued three announcements (No. 1 of 2022, No. 2 of 2022, No. 5 of 2022) in the form of "Three New Foods" with 75 of products approved, including new food raw materials (novel food), new food additives and food-related products (new food contact substances). Among them, 32 kinds of new food additives (including expanded use) were approved.
On January 12, 2023, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) issued a public consultation on four new food raw materials passing the technical review of the CFSA Expert Review Committee. The deadline for public comments is February 12, 2023.

On October 28, 2022, two HMO products (2’-fucosyllactose and Lacto-N-neotetraose) of E. coli origin have passed the technical review of the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) Expert Review Committee and now open for public comments.
